Indian Weightlifter “Mirabai Chanu ” bags gold at World Weightlifting championships in Anaheim, USA. Mirabai Chanu has become the only second Indian to win gold at world weightlifting championships after Karnam Malleswari.
Mirabai Chanu has lifted 85kg in snatch and 109kg in clean and jerk to total an impressive 194kg in the women’s 48kg to bag gold at the World Weightlifting Championships in Anaheim, USA on Thursday.
After a disappointing performance at the Rio Olympics last year, Mirabai made sure that she bags gold at the world championships. After achieving the feat she turned down into tears as she walks up to the podium to receive the medal. The Silver medal was won by Thailand’s Sukcharoen Thunya with a total lift of 193, and the Colombian Segura Ana Iris got the bronze with 182kg.
This feat was earlier achieved by weightlifter Karnam Malleswari, for the years 1994 and 1995. she has also bagged bronze at the Olympics who hails from Andhra Pradesh.
Hon’ble Sports minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore took twitter to congratulate Mirabai Chanu. Minister in a post on Twitter wrote, ” Saikhom Mirabai Chanu wins #Gold in 2017 IWF Senior Men & Women #weightlifting championships in Anaheim, USA. In the 48 kg weight category, her total lift was 194 kg. That’s 4 times her bodyweight. In sports, and in life, ‘Will’ is everything. Never, EVER give up.”
