Kerala offers up to 50 percent subsidy in increased electricity bill for its consumers

  • Electricity is now offered free for consumers who use up to 40 units of electricity per month who have a connected load of below 500. Consumers in that category will be given free electricity without taking into account their consumption.

Chief Minister of the state, Mr. PinarayiVijayan said that there is nothing wrong noted in the increased electricity bill in the lockdown period. He said this addressing the media, in his after review meeting of the pandemic on Thursday.

He stated that it was natural that the electricity consumption has increased in the lockdown period and in the backdrop of the complaints raised in this regard, the Kerala State Electricity Board will further investigate the matter. Some decisions have also been taken. As per the earlier records, electricity consumption increases in the months of February and May. With the lockdown, the consumption for the same has increased even more. KSEB was not in a position to collect the reading in the two months, and therefore the reading was taken together after four months.

However, there is no change in the tariff structure or of the electricity rate. Base don the numerous complaints filed, after an investigation of the matter by the KSEB, consumers can now pay in installments. None of the electrical connections will be disconnected over the non-payment of bills.

Also, electricity is now offered free for consumers who use up to 40 units of electricity per month who have a connected load of below 500. Consumers in that category will be given free electricity without taking into account their consumption. Consumers who consume up to 40 units of electricity per month with a connected load of 1000 are charged Rs 1.50 per unit. These consumers will be charged at the same rate, irrespective of their consumption.

Consumers who use up to 50 units of electricity per month will be granted a 50 percent subsidy in the increased bill amount due to additional consumption.

Consumers who use up to 100 units of electricity per month will be granted a 30 percent subsidy in the increased bill amount due to additional consumption.

Consumers who use up to 150 units of electricity per month will be granted a 25 percent subsidy in the increased bill amount due to additional consumption.

Consumers who use more than 150 units of electricity per month will be granted a 20 percent subsidy in the increased bill amount due to additional consumption.
